Born in 1924 in Tazlar Village of Afyon, Asım Kocabıyık completed his primary school and first 2 years of his secondary school in Afyon. He completed his last year of the secondary school in Istanbul and high School in Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Boys' High School). Then he graduated in 1947 from Istanbul University, School of Economics.
Asım Kocabıyık, whose business life was in parallel with the industrialization process of Türkiye, started to take part in business while he was yet a student in 1944 as a founding partner and Board Member in İstikbal Ticaret T.A.Ş. founded by his father, Ahmet Kocabıyık. Kocabıyık served a total of 57 years; in the beginning he served in İstikbal Ticaret A.Ş., which imports steel-iron and agricultural products, as a Board Member for 8 years, and 49 years as the Board Chairman. The company, the foundations of which were laid by Asım Kocabıyık with his father also constitutes the core of today's Borusan Group.
Kocabıyık, who stepped in the industry sector with 27 employees, is the founder of Borusan Group, which incorporates various industry organizations that employ almost 8000 workers, and where significant distributorship activities are carried out.
Kocabıyık focuses on social responsibility activities largely in the field of education, and defines these activities as follows: I owe services to my country. I am just serving to that purpose". Kocabıyık, undertook social activities in the field of education, culture, art and environment.
Asım Kocabıyık also appeared among the founders of Türkiye Family Health and Planning Association (TAPV), TEMA, Education Volunteers Association, Turkish Music Association and Afyon Education Association. He served for 24 years in the management of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, 15 years in TUSIAD and served as a chairman for 4 years in Economic Development Foundation.
Asım Kocabıyık was honored with the title of honorary PhD by various high education institutions such as Istanbul University. Kocabıyık was also honored with the Order of Merit and Order of Chivalry granted by Italian Government.
