Education and the arts: indispensable pillars of a developed society

Established in 1992 by Asım Kocabıyık, his wife Z. Nurhan Kocabıyık, and their children to operate in the fields of education and culture, the Asım Kocabıyık Culture and Education Foundation has continued its activities under the name Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation since 2007. The Foundation operates with the conviction that education and the arts are essential elements of a developed society, and with the mission of fulfilling Borusan Group’s Founder and Honorary Chairman Asım Kocabıyık’s “debt of gratitude to the country.”

The Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation continues its work with the belief that reaching Türkiye’s level of contemporary civilization, advancing its secular and democratic Republic, and achieving economic development are only possible through education. By contributing lasting works such as schools, dormitories, libraries, and kindergartens, the Foundation prioritizes education projects and scholarship programs that support both individual and social development, with a strong focus on children and youth.

The Foundation carries out its activities in education through support for endowed institutions, educational projects, and scholarship and grant programs. Alongside complementing the educational activities of schools it has established—such as meeting needs for computer labs, laboratories, and libraries—it also supports robotics and technology teams that foster student development, as well as improvements in physical learning environments. These have been core components of the Foundation’s work since its establishment.

In line with its mission to contribute to culture and the arts—considered one of the key drivers of the country’s modernization—Borusan Sanat was established in 1997 and continues its activities at its building on İstiklal Avenue, the heart of Istanbul’s cultural life. Through the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (BIPO), composed of some of Türkiye’s most accomplished musicians and recognized across Europe, and Borusan Klasik, an online classical music radio station, Borusan Sanat sustains its cultural contributions. Since May 2009, it has operated as an economic enterprise under the Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation.

Borusan Holding, which owns one of Türkiye’s most comprehensive collections of media art, institutionalized its activities in the field of visual arts through Borusan Contemporary. Established in 2011 at Perili Köşk—Borusan Holding’s headquarters—as an economic enterprise of the Foundation, Borusan Contemporary continues to fill a significant gap in its field through its exhibitions and events.

Supporting Education

Supporting education, contributing to future generations

With the belief that education and the arts are indispensable to a developed society, and guided by the mission of fulfilling Asım Kocabıyık’s “debt of gratitude to the country,” the Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation continues its work across education, culture, music, and visual arts. In the field of education, the Foundation provides lasting contributions such as schools, dormitories, libraries, and teacher training facilities, while prioritizing scholarship and project programs that foster both social and individual development.

Through the permanent institutions it has established across Türkiye, the Foundation contributes to education in the long term and regularly carries out maintenance, repair, and infrastructure improvement efforts to ensure their sustainability. Institutions supported by the Foundation include:

Scholarship and Support Programs

Supporting students

Since its establishment, the Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation has continued to expand its work in education under the philosophy of a “lifelong commitment to giving back,” supporting equal opportunities in education through its scholarship programs.

Through scholarships provided to undergraduate students in Türkiye, the Foundation helps young people continue their education without interruption, while adopting a holistic approach that supports not only their academic development but also their personal and professional growth.

To date:

  • 5,525 students have received full scholarships
  • 9,255 students have received supplementary support scholarships

Support scholarships cover essential needs such as accommodation, meals, transportation, and technology, providing access to tools like computers and tablets as well as support for daily living expenses.

A Multi-Layered Support Model: Hep1İz Scholarship Program

The Foundation’s scholarship approach extends beyond financial support. The Hep1İz Scholarship Support Program offers a multi-layered model designed to better prepare scholarship recipients for life.

Within this program, students are provided with:

  • English language training
  • Mentorship from volunteer Borusan employees
  • Access to digital learning resources through audiobook subscriptions
  • Access to expert support in areas such as psychological, legal, and medical counseling

Through this holistic model, the aim is not only to support students in continuing their education, but also to help them grow into self-aware individuals who can develop their potential and are well-prepared for professional life.

Projects

Borusan Story House

Borusan Story House is an experiential, out-of-school education program developed in collaboration with the Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation and the Beyoğlu District Directorate of National Education. The program uses storytelling as a tool for self-expression, understanding others, and creating a safe learning environment, and is designed primarily for children aged 7–9.

Through workshops developed based on field-specific needs analyses and combining multiple disciplines, the program supports children’s creativity, expression, and critical thinking skills. It has evolved into a holistic structure by expanding to include teacher and parent engagement.

English Language Support Program

English Language Support Program was launched to ensure that students studying at endowed schools graduate with strong English proficiency. The program is delivered through digital learning technologies and native English-speaking instructors, focusing on communication, comprehension, and practical language use, while equipping students with competencies aligned with a global world.

Dream Partner Book Project

Dream Partner Book Project, launched in 2016, aims to increase students’ access to books, foster reading habits, and support their imagination. The project delivers a rich and diverse selection of books—from children’s literature to world classics—to schools across Türkiye.

To date, the project has reached 2,721 schools across all 81 provinces and delivered over 418,000 books to children, contributing to their educational journeys.

Robotics and Vehicle Teams

The Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation also supports Robotics and Vehicle Teams to enhance hands-on learning experiences in vocational and technical education. These teams, operating within Borusan Asım Kocabıyık Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, help increase students’ interest in science and technology while developing multidisciplinary skills. By participating in national and international competitions, they represent Türkiye and contribute to students’ technical knowledge, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
