Uludağ University Students Hold Memorial Service for Asım Karabıyık

Students of Uludağ University's Gemlik Sunğipek Asım Kocabıyık Campus held a special memorial service on the anniversary of Asım Kocabıyık's passing. The memorial service was held on December 26, Wednesday at the Asım Kocabıyık Cultural Center and was attended by Asım Karabıyık's widow Nurhan Kocabıyık, his son Ahmet Kocabıyık, his grandchildren, alongside Bursa's Deputy Governor Vedat Müftüoğlu, Gemlik's District Governor Cahit Işık, Uludağ University's Rector Prof. Dr. Kamil Dilek, and Gemlik's Deputy Mayor Refik Yılmaz.

Halil Aksu, President of Uludağ University's Law Club, took to the stage to deliver the opening speech: "Asım Kocabıyık was one of the household names of Turkey's industry, an individual who distinguished himself by turning a local business into a global entity like Borusan. Mr. Asım had paid back his debt to his country countless times before he passed away. Now it is time that we pay him back. We, the students whom he saw as his own children, will continue on his path by adopting his mission because we are duty-bound to keep his legacy and memory alive for the next generations to see. We won't forget, nor will we let people forget you. Rest in peace Uncle Asım."

Asım Kocabıyık's grandson and Board Member of the Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation said: "This namesake campus of my grandfather that reflects his love for Gemlik holds a special place in our hearts as well. He would always say how proud he was of the Gemlik campus and how it would become a science hub. Another concrete sign my grandfather's passion for Gemlik and education in overall is the Asım Kocabıyık Cultural Center we are currently in. He had contributed to dozens of educational facilities but the last opening ceremony he attended was this namesake cultural center. What better place than here to promise that we will continue to keep-up his legacy and contribute to educational causes."

During the service a short movie showcasing the faculty members' and student's compassion for Mr. Asım and a presentation detailing Asım Kocabıyık's life, his memories, and success stories, complete with sections of his speeches, were also screened.
